Getting stuck in the snow can be a frightening experience if you don’t know how to respond. We can help. Our Mercedes-Benz service experts at Mercedes-Benz of Silver Spring are outlining the steps to take if you find yourself caught in the snow.
Check Your Surroundings
If it’s safe to do so, you need to get out of your vehicle and check your surroundings. You need to see which tires are caught and how badly. If your exhaust pipe is covered, make sure you turn your vehicle off until you can clear it.
Break Up the Snow Around You
Your winter emergency kit should contain a small shovel (if it doesn’t, this is your reminder to add one now). Clear the snow away from your tires, making a path for the wheels to move.
Rock the Vehicle Back and Forth
Now, it’s time to try to get out by rocking the vehicle back and forth. First, make sure that any traction control system is turned off. If possible, increase your traction under the tires with sand, kitty litter, or even your floor mats, if you must.
Alternate between driving the vehicle a little bit forward, and then a little bit backward. Repeat this several times to get your wheels unstuck. Drive slowly and do not slam on the gas. If this doesn’t work, it’s time to call for roadside assistance.
