From Humble Beginnings to Global Recognition

The Mercedes-Benz AMG® brand began with a passion for speed. The AMG® name is drawn from the names of its founders, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, and Aufrecht's home city of Großaspach. What began in 1967 as an independent tuning house modifying and racing various Mercedes-Benz models would eventually become the Mercedes-Benz brand's in-house performance division. 

Their early success, including a win in the 1965 German Touring Car Championship, solidified their reputation as performance pioneers. By the 1980s, AMG® had carved a name with iconic creations like the mighty "Hammer," a 300 CE 6.0 that redefined muscle car performance. This period also saw the development of their signature "One Man, One Engine" philosophy, where each Mercedes-Benz AMG® engine is hand-crafted by a single technician.

A Powerful Partnership

The 1990s marked a turning point in the brand's history. A collaboration with Daimler-Benz, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, opened doors for the AMG® division. The first joint venture included the Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG®, which brought exhilarating performance to a broader audience. This model was also featured as the official Safety Car on the Formula 1 track.

Endless Innovation

In 2005, DaimlerChrysler acquired AMG®, ultimately paving the way for a new chapter of focused development. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG® launched in 2010 and stood as a testament to its engineering as the first car designed entirely by the brand. This marked a significant milestone, showcasing the AMG® brand's ability to modify existing vehicles and create new performance counterparts.
